The Powerbook, created by Coach Guy, is a very powerful tool that serves to guide coaches and players towards their physical, mental and team goals. The Powerbook serves the following functions:
The Powerbook is “The Practice Field of the Mind”:
Coaches unanimously agree that the mental side of an athlete is far more important than his/her physical attributes, but few actually walk-the-talk and put the time in to address this vital part for success on a daily basis. Using the Powerbook solidifies a coaches commitment to an athlete’s mental development and personal growth as a person and teammate.
The Powerbook directs players to “Take Daily Responsibility” for their own learning and athletic progress for practice. The Powerbook system requires each athlete to set a goal for themselves, write them down, remain focused on them throughout practice and evaluate them at the end of practice. Athletes learn the most common trait of successful people and that is “how to set and follow through on goals.”
Daily recording and tracking of practice performances:
“Rapid improvement occurs when we manage the skills we value.”
This principle is a mainstay in Coach Guy’s coaching world. Manage the skills you value and you improve more rapidly than any conventional coaching or training. Coach Guy has devised a system of scoring personal practice performances that allows athletes to quantify and record each performance.
The Goal then, is to simply come to practice breaking records every day…hence the term BRED. The Powerbook is used daily to record and track every athletes performance on specific ball control skills and makes it easy to see those athletes who are willing to compete against themselves every day versus the ones who get tired, distracted, lose focus and do not improve. What seems to be a simple recording and tracking of daily results is more a measure of an athletes mental toughness to get through three months of daily grind, to get better and break records every day.
The essence of Coach Guy’s Powerbook is to create the best version of themselves as people, teammates and volleyball players. Who our athletes become as they strive to be positive contributors, win starting roles, matches, leagues and state titles is the ultimate measure of success. The Powerbook is the tool that centers the team around growth as people, which is the fundamental requirement for any success.
